Our Loved Ones Are Talking

Are we missing the signs?

My cousin Julie lives in Cherry Creek, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. She and her daughter were recently here in Orlando for the National Cheerleading Championships and I’m thrilled to report their team placed second in their category! It was exciting to see, especially since my boys played soccer and I really don’t know from high level competitive cheerleading. Nevertheless, now I can’t stop hearing “Cheer for the cherries!!” in my head and it makes me smile.
Since she lives in Colorado and I live in Florida, it’s a rare gift for Julie and I to have a chunk of time to spend together so I jumped at the chance to hang out when she invited me to come watch the competition, even though it was freezing (for us)!

After the competition was over, the teams headed to Disney World. Not surprising since the event was held at ESPN’s sports complex, on Disney property and the teams were all given discount tickets to the parks. This is Orlando after all and we decided to go along for the fun. The Magic Kingdom was mobbed. There were cheerleaders and dance teams everywhere! Not really that surprising under the circumstances.
Of the seven grandchildren in my generation, Julie and I are the closest in age and growing up we loved spending time together. We had a great day in Mickey land, riding rides, talking about all sorts of things and we even caught up to the girls for a quick hello while they waited in line for the Tron ride.
Julie left the next morning and I headed off to the gym. That’s when the cherries started showing up.
First there was a guy in a pink t-shirt with two smiling cherries on the chest and I thought, “that’s cute, he’s wearing cherries.” A few minutes later another guy walked by. He had on a grey t-shirt with two scowling black cherries on the front. Now that’s a little weird. Not because the men were wearing cherries or that one set was smiling and the other was not. It’s just that I don’t recall ever seeing cherry motifs at the gym or anywhere really, in my day-to-day life. Honestly, I don’t like cherries, the fruit or the flavor so I usually avoid them when they’re around. These two shirts, with similar logos, passed right in front of me, one after the other. I couldn’t have missed them if I tried. Something was definitely going on.
Growing up, Julie’s mom, Aunt Linda was one of my favorite people. Truthfully, she was one of everyone’s favorites. She was endlessly positive, cheerful and funny. She had a laugh that could light up the room and she valiantly fought cancer with that smile for half of my life. It’s hard to believe she’s been gone now for almost a decade. She is missed every day and there’s rarely a conversation with Julie or her sisters where we don’t reference Linda in some way. We talk about her warmth, her sense of humor and her ability to burn through a credit card like nobody’s business. Was she trying to get my attention?
I made a mental note to give Julie a call after I finished my client appointments for the day and went on with my workout. I didn’t think any more about it until my last client came in and sat on the couch. A sweet young woman in a hoodie and t-shirt and, as she unzipped her hoodie I couldn’t help but smile. There, on her pale pink tee were two red cherries with Mickey Mouse ears! You seriously can’t make this stuff up!
During her session, we had a great conversation and then she asked me, “how do I know if the signs are real or I’m just making it up?” It’s a fairly common question in mediumship and in answering, I pointed to her shirt. I shared about the other shirts I saw that day and the cheerleaders from Cherry Creek. It was no accident or coincidence, she chose to wear that specific shirt, that specific day. I had never worked with or met her before that day and she told me she had gone back and forth between wearing two shirts that morning. She chose the one with the Mickey cherries and that decision ultimately became confirmation for both of us. The signs are there, we’re just often too busy to notice them or even to stop and say “thank you, I know that was you.”
For me and my cousin, the sign was clear that her mom was around and paying attention. It seemed obvious she knew that we’d all been together “cheering for the cherries” and enjoying time at Disney World. For my client, who allowed intuition to guide her in the seemingly innocuous choice of picking out her shirt for the day. A choice which allowed the spirits and guides around her to use that moment of trust to show her, without a doubt there’s more going on around us than meets the eye.
We do not move through the world alone. Spirit, our guides, guardian angels, loved ones, even our pets, can all offer us wisdom and guidance if we’re willing to stop, look and listen. Like many of us, my client had been wrestling with very common questions; When I ask for signs, will I get them? Is there really something more out there to help me and guide me? How do I know any of this is real or is it all just wishful thinking?
I did not know her. This was our first meeting and I know it was not an accident that her appointment with me was on this particular day. The day after I’d been at Disney with Julie and her daughter. It was not a coincidence she was guided to wear that shirt. She had no way of knowing anything the previous day, about the cheer competition or the cherries. It happened because she was willing to open herself up to something more and to trust that nudge when it came to her. The desire to believe that Spirit is always there, willing to help, is a big first step. The next one is to welcome them in instead of chocking things up to coincidence. I, personally, think there’s no such thing.
When I called Julie later that evening, she agreed. It made perfect sense that her mom would be around and was letting us know she was joining in on our fun. When I described the Mickey cherry shirt to Julie, she sent me the picture above. The cheer teams have designated outfits so everywhere they go, they’re completely coordinated. That same day, the Cherry Creek team was also choosing shirts, between the one pictured above and a plain mint green shirt, shorts set. They ended up in the cute mint green tank tops. If they had opted instead, to wear the white shirt with Mickey Mouse cherries on it, it’s likely I would have seen my client’s shirt as just another Disney shirt. But, they chose mint green instead.
I’ve lived in Orlando a long time and we are Disney Annual Passholders as well. In all my years of going to Disney, I can never recall seeing Mickey Mouse cherry imagery. Now, here were two, back to back. These shirts are not coincidence, they are signs from our loved ones, reminding us they’re here and paying attention. And truthfully, the way my aunt loved to shop, I’m betting she was with us at the outlet mall the day before as well!
Loved ones, angels and guides are around us and they’re trying to let us know. They really do want to help and truthfully, there’s so much more they could show us if we’d be willing to ask. And listen. Don’t believe me? Check out the time I got pulled over by the police because I asked Spirit for help!
